Mission statement

SwissGradNet is designed for PhD candidates, who strive for a research career in the fields of Design, Film and Art, wanting to pursue a use-inspired, i.e. practice-based or practice-led PhD programme in the applied sciences.

As a general rule, SwissGradNet aspires to allow selected candidates to be enrolled at an international partner university and, at the same time, be employed at a Swiss University of Applied Sciences, where the majority of the doctoral work will be carried out. The objective shall be to support the candidates for a stable situation, both financially and concerning the employment. However, alternative forms of collaboration are possible and must be negotiated directly with the respective institutions.

SwissGradNet provides one conference per year, lectures, tutorials and supervision for the students as well as advanced training for supervisors.

SwissGradNet sees itself as a community for use-inspired PhD’s and research, as an association of both academic and applied sciences’ universities in the fields of Design, Film and Art, with the objective to foster and promote the further development of use-inspired PhD’s both in Switzerland and abroad.

Use-inspired basic research

Referring to the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) and including the particular methodic approaches of the fields of Design, Film and Art, SwissGradNet understands use-inspired basic research as it has been introduced by Donald E. Stokes.
